According to BBC Live, former England goalkeeper Rob Green was not happy with the performance of Chelsea star Mason Mount against the United States in the World Cup.
The Three Lions played out a drab goalless draw in a game where the USA dominated for the majority of it. Mount, who was good against IR Iran, struggled to make any impact.
Green was surprised that manager Gareth Southgate did not bring the 23-year-old off and kept him on for the entirety of the game. Phil Foden of Manchester City, meanwhile, was an unused substitute for the entirety of the game.
Here’s what he exactly said after the full-time whistle was blown (h/t BBC Live):
“When England were making the first substitutions I had Mason Mount down to come off. It just didn’t come off. That doesn’t make him a bad player, it happens. It was baffling that he stayed on for the 90 minutes. It was strange.”
Sometimes, we do not even have to look at the stats to quantify how good or bad a player was in the game. It was clear how ineffective Mount was.
And if we delve into the numbers, the Chelsea man had 45 touches, lost possession 13 times, created zero chances and had only shot in the game (Sofascore). Taking into account that he is an attacking midfielder in this team, that was a howler.
But, players can have bad performances now and then. From England’s viewpoint, it was appalling to see that Southgate did not even bring him off in the latter stages of the game, let alone way before that.
For us Chelsea fans, it was slightly symptomatic of how we have seen Mount play in some of the games during the first half of the season. He has good displays, but now and again had games where he was invisible.
He would hope to get that right when England play Wales next. We want him to do well and return to peak form which would help the country and the club when league football resumes.
