Chelsea eye £4.3m January swoop for Barcelona star with prior Premier League experience

Chelsea eyeing a move for Barcelona star Memphis Depay who could be available for just £4.3m.

According to reports in Express (h/t Football.London), Chelsea are eyeing up a January move for Barcelona forward Memphis Depay who could be available for as little as £4.3m.

The Blues were linked with the Dutch international during the summer transfer window as well, but the move did not materialise. They could reignite the interest again in the winter window.

Depay, who is with the Netherlands squad for the World Cup, is out of contract at the end of the season. Barcelona were keen on selling him in the summer to recuperate good money.

They could yet offer the former Manchester United forward in the winter window to get any price possible. The 28-year-old has been short on game time this season, with a total of only three appearances in all competitions.

He is still a good player though who can operate in multiple positions across the forward line. His numbers for Lyon were very good before joining Barcelona in the summer of 2021.

For a price as low as that, can Chelsea take a chance and sign Depay? It may not ideally be with the plans Graham Potter and his men have.

Depay was good during his Lyon days.

However, seeing how the Blues strikers have struggled for goals this season, it would not be a bad idea to sign the Dutchman in January and see how it goes till the end of the season. If he does well, he can be a bargain buy, if not, then probably try offloading him in the summer and look for better options.

All in all, it can be said that signing Depay won’t be a financial disaster. He did have a mediocre time the last time he played for an English club though. But, United paid a lot more than Chelsea might need to next January.
