Chelsea defender Ben Chilwell sends a message to fans after injury shatters his World Cup dreams

Ben Chilwell released a tweet sending a message to Chelsea fans following the shattering of his World Cup dreams after picking up a serious hamstring injury.

The England international picked up the injury in the second-half stoppage time against Dinamo Zagreb on Wednesday. He left the stadium on crutches that night, raising concerns about his availability for the World Cup starting in two weeks’ time.

The former Leicester City defender had his scans done on Saturday, which revealed the news everyone was fearing of. He will now start his rehabilitation with the club’s medical team to get fit as soon as possible and feature for Chelsea after the World Cup.

Chilwell has had an unfortunate last 12 months in football with regard to his physical setbacks. The 25-year-old picked up an ACL injury in November last year, which kept him out of action until the very end of last season.

He was slowly getting back into the groove this season and was not starting every game to manage the workload. Despite doing all that, he has managed to pick up another bad injury.

It is a big blow for England as well because Gareth Southgate generally plays with a back three and two wing-backs in his system. Chilwell is one of the left wing-backs in the country. Not having him would force the manager to make bold decisions as to who starts there now. Luke Shaw seems like an automatic replacement, but his form hasn’t been good.
