Speaking to BoyleSports Football (h/t Football.London), former Premier League defender Glen Johnson believes Chelsea striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang can be a hit at the club following his summer window deadline day move.
The former Arsenal striker, who was at Barcelona before arriving at Stamford Bridge, has made a bright start to life in a Blue shirt. He has scored two goals in four appearances so far, with prospects of more to come in future games.
Johnson talked about the 33-year-old knowing the Premier League having played for the Gunners before. He went on to mention how it depends on the player himself to decide how much he wants.
Here’s what the former Chelsea and Liverpool defender said (h/t Football.London):
“I think Pierre Emerick-Aubameyang can be a big hit for Chelsea now, he knows the Premier League and how to score goals, it’s more about him wanting to be there, him wanting to score and overall, his happiness. We’ve all seen him score bangers for Arsenal over the years so we know he’s more than capable, it’s just about how much he wants it.”
Aubameyang has more or less been a hit wherever he has played, especially since the start of his Borussia Dortmund days. Despite an unfortunate ending to his Arsenal career, the former Gabon international was a superstar there, scoring key goals in the league and decisive cup games.
Under Graham Potter, Chelsea are expected to play front-foot football with an aim to create plenty of chances in each game. With the clinical edge of Aubameyang, the Blues could well be an attacking force after being meek in that area last season.
The creative force, chiefly consisting of Reece James, Mason Mount, Raheem Sterling and co, is a solid one that can assist loads of chances for the striker.
The 2018/19 Premier League joint-Golden Boot winner has every quality in his game to cause havoc for opposition defenders. His versatility is an added feather to his cap.
Even though he is 33 now, Aubameyang looks in good shape to continue delivering at the highest level for a few more years. Hence, the decision by Chelsea to grant him a three-year contract could be worth a mention of high praise.
