Chelsea set to announce former Bundesliga decision maker as new technical director

Chelsea are set to announce Christopher Vivell as their new technical director

According to the Mirror, Chelsea are set to announce former RB Leipzig director Christopher Vivell as their new technical director. He will be taking over from American owner Todd Boehly who has been acting as the sporting director on an interim basis.

The Blues have been on the hunt for a sporting director for quite some time now. They had almost managed to secure a deal for RB Salzburg technical director Christoph Freund but the move eventually fell through. Hence, they were forced to look at other options.

Boehly has been in the role of the sporting director for quite some time now, ever since Marina Granovskaia’s exit from the club. He is now looking to relinquish the responsibility and hand it over to someone specialised in this, as the Blues look to build towards the January transfer window.

Vivell, who is best known for being a part of the team that unearthed a certain Norwegian who is now tearing up the Premier League called Erling Haaland was initially a part of Freund’s set-up at Salzburg before taking over as the sporting director at RB Leipzig in 2020.

The German director parted ways with the club some day ago though, with the club citing “contrasting views” as the reason behind it. This played its way right into the hands of Chelsea who anyways had Vivell on their shortlist even before that.

The Blues are now set to announce Vivell as the technical director. He will have big shoes to fill in the form of Marina Granovskia. The Russian director had such a successful stint in her role at Stamford Bridge and Vivell will need to live up to her legacy.

Former Liverpool director Michael Edwards was also heavily linked with a role at Stamford Bridge but a move for him eventually fell through. Vivell’s sacking came as a timely boost for Chelsea and made their decision very easy and appoint the German.

Chelsea will be hoping that Vivell will be able to unearth more Erling Haalands for the Blues. If he can do the job as well as Granovskaia did, this will be an excellent appointment from the Blues.
