“Could go there long-term”: PL ace tips English striker to be a success at Chelsea

Troy Deeney tips Chelsea to keep an eye on Brentford striker Ivan Toney if he continues his form

Premier League ace Troy Deeney has tipped Brentford striker Ivan Toney to attract interest from the likes of Chelsea if the English forward keeps up his fine form.

The former Watford ace who spent 11 years with the Hornets believes Toney has the minerals to make it at the top. Toney joined the Bees in the summer of 2020 and has been their talisman ever since.

In his column on The Sun (h/t Metro), Deeney believes the Brentford centre-forward could be someone who could lead the Blues’ line for many years to come. The Birmingham City number nine predicts Toney to be successful under Graham Potter.

“If he has the year he will likely have, even Chelsea will be keeping an eye on him. He could go there long-term and be a real success under Graham Potter.”

After a couple of successful seasons at Peterborough United in League One, Brentford brought the 26-year-old to the Championship. Toney had a record-breaking campaign in English football’s second tier, helping the Bees get promotion to the Premier League.

The English striker scored 12 goals in 33 appearances in the PL last season. And the 26-year-old has started the new campaign in red hot form.

Currently, at Chelsea, apart from Pierre Emerick Aubameyang, there seemingly is no other recognised centre-forward. The Gabonese arrived on transfer deadline day and has evidently struggled to settle in.

Thomas Tuchel was also sacked. The 33-year-old had previously played under the German. However, Potter has taken charge now. The former Brighton manager will have his own idea and style of play.

The Stamford Bridge side have had a hard time scoring goals. We have missed a presence in the box. The likes of Kai Havertz and Raheem Sterling are not natural number nines.

Toney is someone who has grown into his role in West London at Brentford. Chelsea would not be a big change of scenery for the 26-year-old in terms of his personal life. However, it remains to be seen whether the Blues will go in for the striker in the coming years.
