PL rivals in talks to offer Chelsea star a new contract amidst continued interest

Everton in talks to offer Anthony Gordon a new contract amid Chelsea interest

In what will come as bad news to the Chelsea fans, Everton are in talks with Anthony Gordon for a new contract amid interest from Chelsea. This is according to a report published in the Liverpool Echo.

Former Blues legend Frank Lampard confirmed the Toffees’ intentions to offer their star man a new contract. Asked whether his side would offer the 21-year-old a new deal, this is what the Everton manager had to say:

The club are speaking with Anthony and Anthony’s people to see if we can get the right solution.

Chelsea were interested in the Everton forward and offered £60 million for the youngster. However, a move did not materialise despite the money on offer.

Gordon broke through the Everton ranks last season and has been their best player for some time now. The England Under-21 international played a crucial part to help his side survive relegation last season.

The 21-year-old made 35 league appearances last season for the Toffees, scoring four goals and assisting another two. This season, Lampard has been using him as a centre-forward and he has found the back of the net two times in six league appearances.

A versatile player, he would have made a fine addition to the Chelsea squad. The 21-year-old could have been used in the wing or be deployed as a number 10. Former coach Thomas Tuchel was said to be a big admirer of the versatile forward.

However, a lot has changed since then. Tuchel is gone and Graham Potter is in charge of the west London club. The coach is still getting to know his players and it remains to be seen if the Blues reignite any interest in Gordon under him.

It is likely that the Blues will follow Gordon’s renewal closely. His current contract runs till 2025 and the player has time to decide if he wants to continue at the Merseyside club. Should any problems arise, the west London club could think of pouncing on their target.
