Report: Prime target not interested in becoming Chelsea’s sporting director

Luis Campos is not interested in becoming the Chelsea sporting director

In what will come as a blow to Chelsea, Luis Campos has insisted that he is not interested in becoming their new sporting director.

The Blues are in the hunt for a new sporting director since Marina Granovskaia left the club. Co-owner Todd Boehly has been acting as the interim sporting director till now.

Campos was said to be Boehly’s preferred choice but that looks unlikely to happen. Speaking to RMC (h/t Mirror), the Paris Saint-Germain director gave his thoughts.

I have a three-year deal here at PSG, as I wanted, and I’ve joined this club because I’m convinced we can do something extraordinary. I’ve the right energy to fight for PSG and do something great here.

The current PSG sporting director has earned a name for himself after building title-winning squads at AS Monaco and LOSC Lille. These are the only two clubs that have denied PSG a league title since 2012.

Campos has been building a younger team at the Parisian club as he is tasked with helping the Paris outfit win the ultimate prize- the Champions League. Despite huge success in the league, they have failed to win the coveted European trophy in their history.

With Campos ruling himself out for the job at the west London club, Christoph Freund would consider this as a major boost for himself. The RB Salzburg sporting director is also one of the names on Boehly’s list and is now looking like the favourite to grab the vacant place at the club.

Freund refused to rule himself out of taking the job should Chelsea approach him. He is also one of the best in the business, having found several talents during his time at the Austrian club. Freund would also make a suitable candidate for the director’s job.

Boehly will want to appoint a sporting director before the World Cup starts in November. This will give the new director enough time to understand the needs of the club and find suitable players for them in January. It remains to be seen who is appointed for the role at Chelsea.
