Denzel Dumfries is ‘flattered’ to know that a team like Chelsea were interested in signing him in the summer of 2022 from Inter Milan. However, the 26-year-old is focused on being successful with his current employers.
The Blues were looking to sign Dumfries in the recent transfer window. And the Stamford Bridge side put in multiple bids. However, the London club were unable to convince the Serie A giants to part ways with the full-back.
Speaking to De Telegraaf via Goal from Absolute Chelsea on Twitter (h/t football.london), Dumfries expressed delight at a club like Chelsea pursuing his signature. But the Holland international has put the talk behind him for now and expresses his desire to win the league with Inter.
“The interest flatters me, of course. But my focus now is only on Inter. We want to win the Scudetto because we lost it last season.”
Manchester United were another side from the Premier League interested in Dumfries. The Red Devils had an eye on the 26-year-old as well in the summer of 2022.
Dumfries joined the Nerazzurri last year from PSV Eindhoven. The Holland international went straight into Simone Inzaghi’s starting XI and impressed with his performances.
However, Inter were unable to reproduce the success they had under current Tottenham Hotspur manager Antonio Conte in the 2020/21 season. The Italian giants lost the Scudetto to AC Milan in the previous campaign.
At Chelsea, Reece James is the established full-back on the right-hand side of the defence. Previously under Thomas Tuchel, the England international was pivotal playing as our wing-back.
When James was unavailable last season, Cesar Azpilicueta deputised for him. However, our captain is 33 years old and the Blues evidently need to replace him in the future.
Dumfries is an established player at a top side like Inter. And at Chelsea, James has a hold of the position the Holland international plays in. Whether the Blues pursue their interest once again in the upcoming transfer windows remains to be seen.
