“Listen”- Chelsea loanee reveals what Todd Boehly told him before summer transfer

Callum Hudson-Odoi talked about his loan move and discussions with Todd Boehly

As revealed by Daily Mail (h/t Football.London), young Chelsea winger Callum Hudson-Odoi talked about his loan move to Bundesliga side Bayer Leverkusen and shared what the discussions have been about with co-owner Todd Boehly.

The Englishman made a move to Leverkusen on a season-long loan deal very late in the summer transfer window. Generally, clubs that sign the player on loan are interested in adding an obligation or option to buy clause. However, there is no buying option for the German side in this deal.

It has now been revealed that Boehly was adamant that there will be no buy option. The American seems far more involved in the footballing decisions, probably because Chelsea are still operating without a sporting director since the start of the summer.

Here’s what Hudson-Odoi said (h/t Football.London):

“It’s definitely different. When a club is trying to get a player [on loan], they always want that option to buy at the end of the season. Todd was saying: ‘Listen, we want you back here. You’re still on the radar of being wanted by the club’.”

“The way he’s trying to set it up, there are a lot of young players he’s trying to buy for the next few years. It shows he wants to integrate the players into the team and help them develop.”

The 21-year-old also shared the reasons why he wanted to leave Chelsea, citing it as a difficult moment when he was left out of the playing squad against Everton at the opening weekend of the Premier League.

The winger talked about how he started questioning himself in the aftermath of the axe, whether he is doing something wrong here or something went wrong.

This is the first time Hudson-Odoi has managed to leave Chelsea and play football elsewhere. The academy product has been at Chelsea since 2016.

The player has the potential to be a world-class player, but he lacked consistency in a Chelsea shirt. To that point, the winger said playing more football makes a player feel consistent and it allows him to play his best football.

The loan spell at Leverkusen is going good so far, although one assist in five appearances does not justify that. The season is long and there will be opportunities for the 21-year-old to prove why he is regarded as one of the best young players.

The hype around Hudson-Odoi has gone cold in the past couple of seasons. It is now up to the player to stake a claim for a place in Potter’s starting XI. With Boehly behind him, the Englishman would know that his performances elsewhere would not go unnoticed.
