Roma are interested in signing 23-year-old Chelsea defender next January

AS Roma are interested in signing Chelsea defender Trevoh Chalobah

As per a tweet from Rudy Galetti of Calciomercato (h/t Football.London), Italian side AS Roma are interested in signing young Chelsea defender Trevoh Chalobah during the January transfer window.

Roma boss Jose Mourinho is keen on signing a new centre-back in the winter. He is keeping an eye on Tottenham Hotspur’s Japhet Tanganga and Manchester United’s Victor Lindelof.

Chalobah, who had a fine breakthrough season under Thomas Tuchel last time around, was linked with a move to Inter Milan in the summer window. Chelsea rejected the offer by saying the player is not for sale.

However, the 23-year-old, whose contract at Stamford Bridge lasts until 2026, has growing concerns about his game time in a Blue shirt after the arrival of Wesley Fofana.

Chalobah, who made 20 league appearances last season, has made one out of the six played so far this season. But, all of that happened under Tuchel, who is now sacked by the club.

There could be an opening under new manager Graham Potter for the youngster to showcase his quality on the training pitch and earn his place in the team.

Trevoh Chalobah is concerned about his game time this season.

If that does not happen by November though, it won’t be a bad idea to look for a move elsewhere. The 23-year-old England U-21 international has spent a season in France playing for FC Lorient in the 2020/21 campaign, hence he has the experience of playing football outside of England.

From Chelsea’s viewpoint as well they should not keep hold of a player who is not guaranteed any level of game time. Chalobah did well for them last year and is at an age where playing games is the only way to help him gain experience and get better as a player.

If they want to keep him for the future, then there is an option to loan him for a season or two before recalling when there is a definite opening in the centre-back position.
