Report: Chelsea ask PL club to keep them informed on 35-year-old star’s situation

Transfer News: Chelsea are interested in Leicester City striker Jamie Vardy

As per 90min (h/t Express), Chelsea and Manchester United had asked Leicester City to be kept informed of the Jamie Vardy situation. Now, they could be facing a race against time as the Foxes are keen to keep the player.

Brendon Rodgers has confirmed that Leicester wants Vardy to sign a new contract and have opened talks for the same. This will come as a blow to Chelsea who have been interested in the player.

It is no secret that the Blues could do with a lethal number nine. Romelu Lukaku had a disappointing last season and Timo Werner has failed to replicate the goal-scoring form he showed in the Bundesliga.

The Blues were inconsistent in front of goal last season and that seems to have continued into the new season. They managed to win 1-0 against Everton yesterday and the goal came from the penalty spot. The Blues enjoyed most of the possession and even had 6 shots on target, but failed to convert any.

This is a problem which has persisted at Chelsea for some time can only be solved by bringing in a lethal striker. Vardy fits that bill. The Englishman was in fine form last season, despite injury and scored 15 goals in 25 league appearances for the Foxes.

A lethal striker with an eye for a goal, Vardy could help solve the problem. But the Blues will have to act fast. Leicester want to keep their star man for another year whose contract expires in 12 months. A regular player under Rogers, it is unlikely that he will settle for a backup option at another club.

Manchester United are also interested in the striker. Thomas Tuchel will have to act fast if he wants the striker in his team for this season. But given that he is 35 years old, the Englishman would likely be a short-term solution to the problem.

Armando Broja could have a big season ahead of him. However, the player is 20 years old and still needs to gain more experience. A player like Vardy could serve as a very good mentor for the young striker who has the potential to become one of the best in the world.

All in all, Vardy would not be a long-term solution at his age. However, he has the talent and the knowhow to hold the fort until Lukaku returns from Italy and Tuchel can take a call on his future.
