Chelsea not in negotiations for former Arsenal superstar

Transfer News: Chelsea have not approached Barcelona for Pierre Emerick Aubameyang

According to popular Italian journalist Fabrizio Romano on Twitter, Chelsea have not approached Barcelona for veteran Gabonese striker Pierre Emerick Aubameyang despite interest from the Blues to sign the striker this summer.

It emerged recently that the Blues were looking at the Barcelona striker as an option to reinforce their attack ahead of the current campaign. Aubameyang has seen an upturn in form over the last six months and he is no new face to the Premier League.

The face of Arsenal’s attack for many seasons, Aubameyang was for long one of the best strikers in the Premier League featuring among the top goalscorers in each season regularly. However, his career in an Arsenal shirt turned sour eventually.

The Gabonese striker eventually fell out with Mikel Arteta who had question marks over the attitude of the talented attacker and things reached a tipping point after which Aubameyang was stripped of his captaincy duties for the Gunners.

When it reached a stage where there was no repairing the relationship, Barcelona came calling asking Aubameyang to be the man to solve their striker woes. The Gabonese superstar signed for the Spanish giants on free after terminating his contract with Arsenal.

To say that Aubamayeng has been exceptional at Barcelona will not be an overstatement. Settling into the team almost immediately, the Gabonese striker did what he knows best, and started scoring goals for fun as he led Barcelona into a top-4 finish last season.

In 23 matches for the Spanish club under Xavi Hernandez, the 33-year-old striker has managed to score 13 goals and provide one assist across all competitions. Aubameyang also had an impressive pre-season and definitely has a role to play if he stays in Spain.

Chelsea are said to be keen on signing the veteran as the short-term fix to their striker woes with both Timo Werner and Romelu Lukaku leaving the club this summer. Aubameyang could help guide Armando Broja with his experience and the duo can work well together.

Barcelona have Robert Lewandowski now and despite Aubameyang’s performances for the club, they might not be against selling the 33-year-old. It remains to be seen how this goes but for a negotiation to happen, Chelsea must approach Barcelona first if they are serious about signing the former Arsenal man.
