Transfer News: Chelsea are interested in Southampton wing-back Kyle Walker-Peters
According to journalist Jacob Steinberg via Twitter, Chelsea are interested in Southampton right-back Kyle Walker-Peters. He is seen as a player who can provide competition for Reece James.
Thomas Tuchel has been looking to strengthen his defence ahead of the new season. The Blues are also interested in Marc Cucurella and are said to be holding talks with the club and player.
Now Tuchel seems to have added another player to his shortlist and this time a right-back. A former Tottenham Hotspur player, Walker-Peters joined the Saints in 2020 and has become a core member of their squad.
The England international played 37 games for the Saints in all competitions last season scoring two goals and assisting four more in the process. He played a pivotal role as Southampton reached the quarter-finals of the FA Cup last season.
A right-back, he showcased his talent and versatility by playing most of the last season as a left-back. Such a player could not only help cover the right-back position but also the left. He could provide competition to both James and Ben Chilwell.
With the futures of Marcos Alonso and Cesar Azpilicueta uncertain, Walker-Peters seems like one of the best options Tuchel could have. A deal around £30-35 million could be enough to land the player but remains to be seen where the Saints stand about the player.
Such a fee should not hinder Chelsea’s pursuit of the player. After all, the biggest bonus point about the player is that he is already Premier League proven. London born, Walker-Peters should not have any trouble settling back home. He would make a fine addition to the squad and help in adding depth and increasing competition.
