“Very deep”- Thomas Tuchel dissects Chelsea’s performance in the 1-0 win vs Everton

Manager Thomas Tuchel dissects Chelsea’s performance in the win against Everton

Chelsea manager Thomas Tuchel believes that the game against Everton was a mirror image of their last trip to Goodison Park, except this team his side won. Chelsea began their 2022/23 campaign with a 1-0 win over Everton on Saturday.

Tuchel has explained how Everton made it difficult for his side to get a win. This was Chelsea’s first at Goodison since 2017, having lost all their previous four encounters. In the interview as quoted by Liverpool Echo, Tuchel gave his views.

“In general, Everton defended very deep and if you play against a whole block, it’s a lot of discipline and a lot of effort, it’s always difficult to find a chance with the one on ones and you need the quick accelerations and the belief in your game and a bit of freedom. We managed to get the win and to start with an away win is a fantastic result.”

Jorginho scored the only goal of the game from the penalty spot after Ben Chilwell was fouled by Yerry Mina in the box. Chelsea were dominant throughout the game, enjoying the majority of the possession. However, they lacked confidence in the final third.

Despite having six shots on target, Chelsea attackers were reluctant to take the risk in the final third. This is something that they will have to improve upon or they could be struggling in front of goal like last season.

“It seemed we did not want to make decisive mistakes or take the risk we needed in the last 25 metres to open a space up.”

New signings Raheem Sterling and Kalidou Koulibaly started the game and made their debuts. Koulibaly was fantastic at the back and was substituted for another new signing Marc Cucurella. Edouard Mendy again proved why he is the undisputed number one at Chelsea, making some crucial saves to keep his clean sheet.

Conor Gallagher, who excelled at Crystal Palace last season on loan, played his first game in the Chelsea shirt. Armando Broja, another loanee return also got some minutes and was impressive. However, another thing that caught the eye of the fans was the list of players who were not included in the squad.

Marcos Alonso, Timo Werner and Callum Hudson-Odoi were all absent from the bench last evening. All three could be on their way out of Stamford Bridge this summer. Tuchel not selecting them could mean that they might not be featuring again this season.

A win was a very good way to start the new era at the club. Tuchel will hope that his team can carry the same form or better when they host rivals Tottenham Hotspur for a derby match at Stamford Bridge next Sunday.
