Graeme Souness not in favour of Chelsea signing Anthony Gordon

As per his words on Talksport radio (h/t Football.London), Liverpool legend and former manager Graeme Souness is not in favour of Chelsea targeting Everton youngster Anthony Gordon in this transfer window.

Everton have already rejected a bid from the Blues worth £45m. Currently, £50m seems to be the price that Chelsea have to fork out to secure the signing of the 21-year-old Englishman.

Talking about this potential transfer, Souness was talking about why spending such a big money on a player who has had one good season could be risky. He went on to emphasise that Chelsea’s need of the hour is to sign a striker, not a wide forward.

After seeing their initial bid rejected, Chelsea hasn’t yet returned with another offer for Everton. It will be interesting to see if they will splash the cash to sign one of Everton’s bright young stars.

The fact that the 21-year-old is open to leaving Everton if Chelsea comes calling could be a boon for Thomas Tuchel. He has seen several players leave the club this summer and could do with several reinforcements.

Gordon really did come into prominence last season. His performances played a key role in how Frank Lampard’s men narrowly escaped relegation.

Position-wise, Gordon can play anywhere across the forward line and is capable of holding his own as a wide midfielder. If Tuchel wants him, the idea could be to use the player in either wide attacking positions or as one of the wing-backs and use his pace on counter-attacks.

Will this move make a lot of sense from Tuchel and Todd Boehly’s points of view? It is a question mark because of the money involved. It is well documented that Chelsea are still in the market to sign Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, Frenkie de Jong and Wesley Fofana.

Forking out that amount of money on Gordon, a player who can come and add depth but may not every game, sounds a bit too much for now.
