Chelsea winger completes medical ahead of Bundesliga loan switch

Chelsea star Callum Hudson-Odoi completes Bayer Leverkusen medical

According to popular Italian journalist Fabrizio Romano, talented Chelsea winger Callum Hudson-Odoi has completed his medical ahead of a potential loan move to Bundesliga club Bayer Leverkusen for the rest of the season.

Romano claims that the Chelsea wonderkid will join the German club on a very simple loan deal with no option to buy and will return to Stamford Bridge at the end of the season. This could be an indication that the Blues don’t want to part ways with the Englishman.

Callum Hudson-Odoi represents a very curious case for Chelsea. One of the most talented players to come out of Cobham in recent years, the 21-year-old was destined for the very best in football and was expected to become the next big thing at the club.

He has been on Chelsea’s books since 2007 and has progressed through all the youth ranks before making it to the first team. When someone sees the English starlet play, it is easy to understand why he generates so much excitement and the potential is obvious.

However, his performances have often left a lot to be desired. He does show flashes of brilliance but they do not come on a regular basis. The 21-year-old has also been very unfortunate with injuries and often struggles to get a consistent run of games.

Hudson-Odoi can play in multiple positions. He has been used on both wings and even as a centre-forward at times. He can also play on either of the wing-back positions and offer a lot of versatility. He saw a lot of game time during Tuchel’s initial period as Chelsea’s manager but a long-term injury disrupted his progress.

Hudson-Odoi has played 126 times for the Blues senior team to date across all competitions, scoring 16 goals and providing 22 assists across all competitions. However, the 21-year-old is a much better player than these numbers seem to suggest.

A move to Bayer Leverkusen will get the English starlet some much-needed regular game time. There is always the fear of him getting injured though and Hudson-Odoi will have to be careful and play well for the German club to show what he is capable of.
