Journo: PL Golden Boot-winning striker on Chelsea’s shortlist as “last-minute backup”

Chelsea have Leicester City striker Jamie Vardy in their potential list of backup options this summer

Leicester City striker Jamie Vardy is a potential option for Chelsea as a “last-minute backup”, according to Give Me Sport’s Dean Jones via the Chasing Green Arrows on Youtube (h/t football.london).

While Jones admitted he heard the story from a source that “wasn’t the greatest”, the football insider felt there must be some sort of substance to it.

The Blues are in need of a striker after letting go of Romelu Lukaku this summer. The Belgian left London after a below-par return to the Bridge. The 29-year-old has been sent on loan back to Inter Milan after his big money move from the Italian giants just a year back.

While we did score the third highest number of goals in the Premier League campaign last season, none of our forwards was really able to convince the fans about their quality.

Our forwards disappointed

Chelsea’s highest goalscorer in the previous campaign was Lukaku, with 15 goals. Kai Havertz, Mason Mount, Timo Wener and Jorginho were the other players in the top five of the goalscoring charts for the Stamford Bridge side.

It’s encouraging that many of the squad members are contributing to putting the ball in the back of the net. But we still require a proven goalscorer to get over 20 goals in a campaign.

Werner isn’t the prolific striker we thought we were buying from RB Leipzig. The German has failed to replicate his form in England. Now, the 26-year-old’s future seems uncertain in London.

Havertz arrived to Chelsea from Bayer Leverkusen in 2020 after impressing in Germany. The 23-year-old primarily played as an attacking midfielder in the Bundesliga. With the Blues last season, the German mainly played as a false nine but failed to be consistent.

Jamie Vardy is a former Premier League Golden Boot winner, winning the award in the 2019/20 season with 23 goals. He may be on the wrong side of 30, but as a short-term option, the Leicester forward can add depth to our squad.
