“Basis in reality”- Chelsea target explains why he chose to move to the Bundesliga

Benjamin Sesko explains RB Leipzig transfer amid Chelsea interest

Red Bull Salzburg has confirmed that their striker Benjamin Sesko will join RB Leipzig next summer. This has put an end to all speculations surrounding the 19-year-old this summer.

Chelsea, along with Manchester United and Newcastle United were said to be interested in the Slovenian striker. He had been linked with a move to these clubs, but now that is not to be as he has already decided on his future.

The centre-forward will spend the current season at Salzburg and then move to Germany for the 2023/24 campaign. Sesko broke onto the scene last season when he scored 10 goals in 36 appearances for the Austrian club in all competitions.

According to the Evening Standard, he has now explained his decision. Sesko admits that he is now taking the next steps in his development.

I have read and heard so much about me in recent weeks, and a lot of it had no basis in reality. In order to end the speculation and fully concentrate on my tasks here at FC Red Bull Salzburg, it was important for me to arrange the next steps in my career already.

Chelsea’s need for a proper number nine is no secret. One who watches the Blues play will know that if they can get a number nine, they can score a lot of goals. And so it was no surprise when Thomas Tuchel was interested in Sesko. But a move seems unlikely to happen now.

There is however an upside to this. The player can now be monitored more properly to see if he was a one-season wonder or not. If he was then Chelsea would have dodged a bullet. If not, they can approach him in 2024 or maybe next season take him on loan with an obligation to buy.

Thomas Tuchel could have done with a striker like Benjamin Sesko.

Kai Havertz plays in the number nine position for Chelsea currently. The addition of Raheem Sterling gives Tuchel the option to rotate players in the strike position. Armando Broja, who had a great last season on loan at Southampton, could also play a vital role this season.

Sesko is young and has to still get some more experience. Tuchel and co will be wise to keep an eye on him in the future too as he has the potential to become one of the best. Whether the 19-year-old ever plays at Stamford Bridge remains to be seen.
