Report: Tuchel vetoed Todd Boehly’s efforts to land world-class rival superstar

Chelsea boss Thomas Tuchel vetoed Todd Boehly’s plans to sign Cristiano Ronaldo

Todd Boehly agreed to terms with Jorge Mendes to bring Cristiano Ronaldo to Chelsea from Manchester United, according to AS (h/t Express), but Thomas Tuchel didn’t fancy the idea of having the Portuguese superstar on his side.

Ronaldo has been the talk of the town for a while now, with the Portuguese legend wanting to leave the Red Devils this summer. The 37-year-old wants to play Champions League football and Chelsea could offer him just that.

Chelsea’s new owners are looking to make a mark this transfer window and Ronaldo came close to being the statement signing of the summer. But Tuchel seemingly pulled the plug on the deal.

We need a proven goalscorer

Ronaldo is a proven goalscorer and the Blues are desperate for one. The purpose of buying Romelu Lukaku from Inter Milan was his development as a reliable goalscorer. The Belgian posted decent figures for the Nerazzurri, which is why Chelsea opted to bring him back.

But Lukaku has been shipped back to Inter Milan on loan and we still don’t have a clinical striker in the squad. The Stamford Bridge side are now focusing on bringing in defensive targets due to the shortage of quality centre-backs.

We’ve got Timo Werner, Kai Havertz, Christian Pulisic, Callum Hudson-Odoi and Hakim Ziyech alongside new signing Raheem Sterling as our attacking options. We’ve got a lot of creativity up front but no one to finish off chances.

Lukaku was Chelsea’s highest goalscorer last season. And he was disappointing for most of the season. Now we don’t have a target man up front. Ronaldo is 37 and at the final stages of his career, but the number seven is the highest goalscorer of all time in professional football.
