Report: Real Madrid add Chelsea striker to transfer shortlist

Transfer News: Real Madrid are keeping tabs on Chelsea striker Timo Werner

According to @mundodeportivo (via Chels HQ ) [h/t Football. London], Real Madrid have added Chelsea striker Timo Werner to their transfer shortlist alongside veteran frontmen Edinson Cavani and Edin Dzeko.

Los Blancos might be looking to sign a backup striker to French superstar Karim Benzema who can provide cover when the talented 34-year-old is not available due to an injury or suspension. Right now, the Spanish giants do not have a reliable replacement for him in their ranks.

Edinson Cavani and Edin Dzeko are two options of veterans of the game who are right now in the twilight of their career and would be content with playing a backup role to Benzema. They can provide cover off the bench and be of great help to Carlo Ancelotti.

Timo Werner is a very different option though. The German striker is still very young and can play in multiple positions. He is a very different striker from Karim Benzema and can also provide depth on either wing if and when required for Los Blancos.

The German’s time at Stamford Bridge has been far from smooth with the talented striker failing to recapture the kind of form he showed in the Bundesliga. Werner joined Chelsea from Leipzig in 2020 on the back of an excellent season with the German club.

The 26-year-old played 37 times for the Blues last season for Thomas Tuchel scoring 11 goals and providing six assists across all competitions. These numbers don’t seem too bad but the problem with Werner is the fact that much more was expected from him.

With Romelu Lukaku leaving the club this summer on loan, it seems clear that Werner might have a huge role to play in Tuchel’s team next season if he were to stay. With the FIFA World Cup coming up, the player cannot afford to settle for a place on the bench.

Real Madrid sounds like a very interesting option for the player. He would not be a starter at the Spanish club but he could have an important role to play. If Chelsea decides to sell him, they could sell to the Spanish giants as long as the fee that we get is adequate.

There is still some time left for the transfer window to end. It remains to be seen what the future holds for Werner and Chelsea. After all, it would be foolhardy for us to sell him without bringing in a replacement.
