RB Leipzig are keen on luring back Timo Werner from Chelsea

Transfer News: RB Leipzig are keen on luring back Timo Werner from Chelsea

According to Sky Germany (h/t the Mirror), RB Leipzig is showing interest in Chelsea forward Timo Werner who may leave Stamford Bridge this summer after a difficult couple of seasons in Blue.

Despite playing in just 37 games and scoring 11 goals across all competitions last season the German experienced a lack of playing time. His performances have paled massively in comparison to the ones he showcased in the Bundesliga.

Before joining Chelsea under Frank Lampard, the forward had his best season in the Bundesliga, tallying 28 goals in 34 games for RB Leipzig. To call the move to Stamford Bridge a disappointment would be an understatement.

Werner acknowledged that he could quit the club earlier this summer, which created even more speculations about his future at Stamford Bridge. Now it is believed that his former team, RB Leipzig are interested in taking him back to his home country.

The German international joined the Blues in 2020 after leaving the Bundesliga powerhouses. The forward, though, has struggled in west London and hasn’t shown the form or ability that led Chelsea to spend big on him.

Timo Werner on his last legs at Chelsea?

In his 89 Chelsea appearances throughout the course of his first two seasons with the team, Werner has only managed 23 goals. Only ten of the attacker’s 23 goals came in the Premier League, despite the player appearing 56 times in the league.

Recent injuries have revealed the fragility of Chelsea’s attacking lineup. When Romelu Lukaku and Timo Werner suffered defeats, the former Dortmund boss was obliged to use Kai Havertz in a central role, but even the German failed to maintain consistency for an extended period of time.

If Werner does decide to leave, one can imagine Chelsea looking for offensive reinforcements. Hakim Ziyech’s owner Todd Boehly is eager to let him leave west London, but Romelu Lukaku has already made a loan move to Inter Milan.

Such a situation shouldn’t exist for a team that strives to win important championships. Even though we signed Sterling, the team urgently needs extra depth to tackle the demanding schedule we have ahead of us.
