Transfer News: Chelsea inform Inter of their long-term intentions regarding Romelu Lukaku

Chelsea willing to extend Romelu Lukaku loan deal for another season before permanent switch to Inter Milan

Chelsea are willing to give Romelu Lukaku to Inter Milan on loan for another season before a permanent transfer can be agreed upon. The Blues hope the Serie A side can afford to take him permanently at the end of the two seasons, according to Matt Law, via Pys on Twitter (h/t football.london).

The Belgian was sent out on loan to his former side after a disappointing season in London. Chelsea asked for a loan fee in order to facilitate the 29-year-old’s move back to Italy after his big-money move to England.

The Belgian was signed to much fanfare almost a year back after a successful spell with Inter. The 29-year-old scored a bunch of goals for the Nerazzurri as well as lifted the Scudetto for the Italian giants.

Lukaku’s homecoming was a good one. The Belgian scored goals in the first few weeks. But his form quickly tailed off and the 29-year-old saw himself out of Tuchel’s XI.

The “interview” mid-season didn’t help Lukaku’s cause. Instead, the Belgian got himself on the wrong side of Chelsea fans as well as the gaffer. With no real improvement in the 29-year-old’s performances, there was no chance of gaining back the supporters’ trust.

Lukaku transfer a letdown

While Lukaku was our top goalscorer last season, the numbers weren’t anywhere as good as people had expected. The Belgian’s time on the pitch left a lot to be desired as well.

Thomas Tuchel opted for other attacking options in front of the 29-year-old. Kai Havertz, Timo Werner, Christian Pulisic, and our other forwards arguably had more impact than the Belgian.

Tuchel seemingly lost trust in Lukaku and benched in some major games, including the EFL Cup final against Liverpool.

All Chelsea fans can hope for now is that the club makes better decisions going into the future. Lukaku previously also had a hard time in the Premier League with Manchester United. Hopefully, with another year on loan, Lukaku is able to get back to his best and the Blues are able to recoup some of the money we spent on him.
