Report: Chelsea offered 25-year-old La Liga midfielder on loan

Transfer News: Barcelona to offer Frenkie de Jong to Chelsea on loan

In another twist regarding the saga involving Frenkie de Jong, a new report has emerged. According to Sport (h/t The Sun), Barcelona could consider a loan deal for the midfielder and have offered the same to Chelsea.

This comes after the Spanish giants have spent heavily in the market this summer, but owe some members of their squad millions in backdated wages. De Jong is said to be owed around £17 million in unpaid wages.

Chelsea have been linked with a move for the player and had informed the Catalan club of their intention to sign the player last week. But that need not be the case as they could potentially get the player on loan now.

The 25-year-old joined the La Liga side in 2019 following an exceptional campaign with Ajax. Since then the Dutch midfielder has gone on to make 138 appearances for the club scoring 13 goals and assisting 17 more in the process.

He has been linked heavily with a move to Manchester United with the club having had a whopping £71.5 million fee accepted for the player, but he is reluctant to join them. The main reason is the absence of Champions League football at Old Trafford.

Chelsea are in a position to offer everything the player wants. But midfield is a department where Thomas Tuchel is flooded with choices. But a loan opportunity for such a good player is hard to pass on.

Should he arrive on loan then Tuchel will be less obligated to play him unless agreed upon before. This could give Chelsea the perfect situation to monitor the player. If he can impress then the Blues could go all out for him next season and if not then it will be a season to forget for all involved.

But there could be another problem. If Barcelona are offering a first-team player on loan then it is very likely they will expect Chelsea to bear the entire burden of the Dutchman’s wages. This could prove expensive for the Blues, who are still looking for players in the market. This puts Tuchel and co in a very peculiar situation.

Apart from the Blues, Bayern Munich are also interested in the player. If Tuchel wants him he should move in now before it is too late. But if Tuchel has no desire to have the player in his team, then it will be one less headache for the Blues and their fans.
