Italian giants leading the race for Chelsea target in Bosman market

Transfer News: AS Roma are leading the race for Chelsea target Isco

According to Football Transfers (via cmdotcom) (h/t Football.London), Italian giants Roma are said to be leading the race for out-of-contract Real Madrid star Isco with Chelsea also interested in signing the Spaniard.

Isco joined Real Madrid from Malaga in 2013 and after nine years with the Spanish behemoths, he is set to leave the club on a free transfer in the summer. The Spanish playmaker’s time at the Bernabeu has had its fair share of highs and lows, with the latter years, in particular, proving disappointing.

With a dismal 17 appearances this season where the 30-year-old has scored just two goals and not provided any assists across all competitions, it is fair to say that this season has been abysmal for Isco. A move away could prove a fresh start for the talented playmaker.

Chelsea are said to be interested in signing the playmaker on a free transfer but it seems like Jose Mourinho and Roma are well ahead in the race to secure the Spaniard.

A fresh beginning?

Isco will hope that moving to pastures new will help resurrect his faltering career and help him realise his truly phenomenal potential. At 30, there are still a few years left in him to make a name elsewhere.

The Spanish playmaker has all the qualities required to succeed in a Thomas Tuchel system and if used correctly, can be of great use to the Blues. An attacking midfielder who can also play as a central midfielder and even on the left wing, Isco can fit in at different positions in the German coach’s system.

A few years ago, we saw the best of Isco at Real Madrid and sometimes, he was simply unplayable. Anyone who has followed the Spaniard knows that the 30-year-old’s playmaking skills are exceptional and he also has a great eye for a goal.

The fact that the player has been inconsistent over the past few years could prove to be a sticking point for the Blues but if they decide to give him a chance, they will have to pack Isco to the hilt. It might help bring the best out of the Spaniard at Stamford Bridge.

Despite Roma being ahead of them, the Blues must pursue Isco. He would be cheap and it is a game worth taking. If it pays off, it could mean great things for Chelsea.
