Journo: Former club not an option for exit-linked Chelsea forward due to expenses

Transfer News: A return to Borussia Dortmund is unlikely for Chelsea star Christian Pulisic

According to Patrick Berger of SPORT1 via Simon Phillips [h/t Football.London], an exit is very much on the cards for talented Chelsea winger Christian Pulisic but a move to former club Borussia Dortmund seems unlikely due to the expensive nature of the deal.

The talented American winger has failed to showcase his best form during his time at Stamford Bridge. Whilst we have seen glimpses of the insane potential the former Dortmund star possesses, injuries have meant that he has been unable to produce them on a consistent basis.

It is being claimed that Chelsea could choose to part ways with a player from whom big things were expected this summer and an exit is not unlikely. However, it seems too early to rush into a decision with a player who is so young and possesses so much talent.

Pulisic joined the Blues from Dortmund in 2019 and was expected to be the replacement to the sensational Eden Hazard as the Belgian left to join Real Madrid. It’s fair to say that that’s not how things have panned out although if Pulisic stays, it could happen in the future.

This season, the 23-year-old has played 38 times for Thomas Tuchel’s side scoring eight goals and providing five assists across all competitions. Whilst these numbers are definitely not dismal, a player of the USMNT star’s quality is capable of much more.

It is not that Pulisic has forgotten how to play football or has not developed into the player he was expected to become. Anyone who has seen the 23-year-old play for the American national team knows that he is still very much the star there and plays to his potential most of the time.

Chelsea’s pursuit of Raphinha and Raheem Sterling seems to suggest that Tuchel could be using a formation with wingers next season. Even if he isn’t, he seemingly wants good, natural wingers in players like Raphinha and Sterling.

If that is the case, then in Pulisic, we have one of the most highly-rated young wingers in Europe, especially when he was at the Signal Iduna Park. It is best to keep him on board and instead, focus on strengthening the attack. Romelu Lukaku is, after all, on his way back to Inter Milan.

If that indeed is the case, then Christian Pulisic deserves another chance to prove at Stamford Bridge what he is capable of. Chelsea seem to be making a hasty decision in parting ways with the USMNT star and let’s hope they change their mind and decide to give the American another chance at being Eden Hazard’s potential successor.
