Journo: Chelsea schedule fresh talks with Italian side for experienced striker

Transfer news: Chelsea schedule fresh meeting with Inter Milan for Romelu Lukaku return

Italian journalist Fabrizio Romano, has said that Inter Milan and Chelsea have scheduled to meet to discuss the terms regarding the transfer of Romelu Lukaku. Inter Milan are apparently feeling confident and could potentially sign the striker on loan.

The Belgian international was Chelsea’s top scorer despite an underwhelming season, where he bagged 15 goals and 2 assists in 44 matches in all competitions for The Blues. He has been widely tipped to leave Stamford Bridge and return to San Siro.

Chelsea signed Lukaku in 2021- for a club-record fee of £97million, following his phenomenal performances with the Nerazzurri, where he scored 24 goals and notched up 10 assists in 36 Serie A games during Antonio Conte’s 2020/21 Scudetto-winning season. However, after an unstable time in England last season, it seems he could be on his way back to Italy.

The saga to end?

The Blues are with the intent to recoup most of the money that they paid for Lukaku, but that is something that is not feasible for Inter. The Italians would prefer a loan move for him this season, but Chelsea is demanding a loan fee of around £17.1m-£21.4m, making the deal a bit tricky for the Milan outfit.

Thomas Tuchel has already identified potential replacements, with Bayern Munich’s striker Robert Lewandowksi and Manchester City’s Gabriel Jesus being the names linked to the club.

Lukaku’s move would be a win for both parties. Chelsea would be planning a revamp of their squad following new ownership of the club, while Inter would perhaps appreciate getting back the man that helped them win the Scudetto and end their 10-year trophy drought.

What happens now is yet to be seen, but the Blues management and fans alike would like to see a positive outcome from this saga. A loan move may give us more time to decide on what to do with Lukaku in the long run.

Selling him after just one season back in England would be a rash decision and hence, Tuchel can use a year to decide what the Belgian striker’s role would be at the club. However, the Blues must make sure any deal compensates the club properly in terms of finances.

Asking the Italian club to bear his wages and pay a loan fee would be smart- but it remains to be seen if this offer is made to begin with.
