Blues backed to pull off at least two major signings this summer

Transfer News: Chelsea backed to sign at least two major names before the 2022/23 curtain-raiser

Former Chelsea striker Tony Cascarino expects the Boehly-Clearlake administration to complete at least two major signings before next season gets underway.

The Blues are currently in the middle of undergoing wholesale changes to their backroom structure and the same is set to reflect on the player recruitment front too.

Chelsea have been heavily linked with Manchester City winger Raheem Sterling and Cascarino believes that the 27-year-old England international will be one of the two big names that he expects to arrive at Stamford Bridge this summer.

Raheem Sterling linked with a move to Chelsea.
Raheem Sterling remains heavily linked with a switch to Chelsea.

Sterling has contributed to 131 goals and 95 assists in 339 appearances for the Citizens but has fallen down Pep Guardiola’s pecking order in recent months. Regular football is on Sterling’s agenda and Chelsea seem happy to oblige.

The reported £50million valuation is going to need some negotiating, but Chelsea are in a position to make the deal happen. Cascarino believes that Sterling can bring a lot of value to many aspects of Chelsea’s attacking gameplay. Speaking to Talksport (h/t the Express), Cascarino said:

“I think they’ll do at least two big signings before the start of the season. I think that Raheem is perfect for Chelsea, I think that they need that kind of player.

It’s going to take more than two

Chelsea are going to need two defenders alone, thanks to the double departure of Antonio Rudiger and Andreas Christensen. Given the circumstances, saying that Chelsea will sign two players seems like a very safe bet to make.

Transfer News: Chelsea are interested in signing Juventus star Matthijs de Ligt.
Juventus star Matthijs de Ligt has emerged as a Chelsea priority in recent days.

Matthijs de Ligt has emerged as a serious option now, and despite Chelsea seemingly taking a step back in their pursuit for Sevilla’s Jules Kounde, that doesn’t necessarily mean that the club have lost interest in the Frenchman.

Amongst other attacking options, Barcelona winger and soon-to-be free-agent Ousmane Dembele has been linked with a move since a very long time but it hasn’t transitioned to advanced negotiations yet.

Long story short – Chelsea need more than two ‘big names’, they know that, and they will most certainly deliver on that front. If the new administration doesn’t, they know that it can have catastrophic repercussions (especially after the backroom reshuffle), should it reflect poorly on the team performance.
