Chelsea have officially announced a complete restructure of their internal boardroom, with the most notable alteration being the departure of long-term Director Marina Granovskaia. Her responsibilities have now been assumed by new co-owner Todd Boehly, who has also been named as the interim Sporting Director.
A full-time appointment is expected in due course but for the purpose of the ongoing transfer window, Boehly will be working closely with Thomas Tuchel to make decisions on recruitment as per the Telegraph (subscription required). It doesn’t seem that Chelsea are in any rush either to name a full-time director, but an appointment is expected in due course.
One of the names that have been floated by the Daily Mail is former Liverpool Sporting Director Michael Edwards. The 42-year-old will be stepping down this summer after an incredible 10 years in Merseyside, during which Edwards helped Liverpool transition from underachievers to serial winners.
He has been responsible for assembling a squad capable of winning every silverware that there is and every top Liverpool signing you can think of in recent years – Alisson, Van Dijk, Fabinho, Keita, Salah, Mane, Firmino – Edwards has been the brain behind assembling all of them.
His accomplishments and experience are obviously invaluable for any football club looking to build a foundation for the future, and interestingly enough, Chelsea find themselves exactly in that position.
With the new Boehly-Clearlake administration in place, Chelsea are set for a thorough rebuild inside and out and someone like Edwards seems to be the perfect candidate to fill the void left behind by the departure of Granovskaia.
It has also been reported that Edwards is considering a break from football for the time being, so it seems unlikely that he will make such a swift return.
Manchester United also appear interested in him. However, owing to his ties to Liverpool, it is difficult to imagine him taking up a job offer at Old Trafford.
Chelsea have other candidates in mind as well, most notably Atletico Madrid’s Sporting Director Andrea Berta. A return for former technical director Michael Emenalo has also not been ruled out by the Mail.
It doesn’t seem like Chelsea will announce a full-time appointment anytime soon though, at least not until the end of the transfer window.
