Report: PL trio looking to snatch Chelsea star earning just £88k-a-week

Manchester United are eying to take advantage of Mason Mount contract situation at Chelsea

According to the Sun, Erik ten Hag is closely following the development in the contract situation of Mason Mount at Chelsea as he waits for the right opportunity to snatch the youngster. Manchester City and Liverpool have also made ‘discreet enquiries’ for the superstar.

Mount has proven to be one of the most vital assets for Chelsea in the latest campaign. His scintillating form has come in handy amid the disappointing spell for the Blues’ forward line. He has bagged a total of 13 goals and 16 assists in 53 matches across all competitions, which is impressive for any midfielder playing in the Premier League.

Despite showing such an influential spell, Mount remains far below Chelsea’s paycheck list. The Englishman has two years left in his £88,000-a-week contract and might be inclined to seek a better deal which he thinks he may deserve.

However, the ownership dilemma stalled contract negotiations from Chelsea’s side initially. The situation is set to improve as Todd Bohely has come to the helm. But the growing defensive requirements have obliged the club to push down Mount’s contract talks on the priority list.

Amid such a situation, Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag has shifted his focus on the Chelsea youngster. The Dutchman noticed the 23-year-old first during his influential spell at Vitesse Arnhem on loan. Now, the manager is seeking an opportunity to tempt Mount to join his force at United.

What are Chelsea required to do?

Mount has been loyal to the club for several years and it remains to be seen if he betrays the trust of the fans and his beloved club to switch to a direct rival. However, if the situation worsens following the ownership change he might be obliged to consider the choices best for his career.

The kind of performance he has given in the last two campaigns reflects that he deserves a much bigger package than the one he currently earns at Chelsea. He is no longer a youngster looking to make a mark on the team but a very important part of Tuchel’s first-team set-up at the Bridge.

Chelsea would be smart to keep communicating with Mount about the plans that they have for him. Considering he has a great affection for the club, he might understand the intensity of the current situation and why defensive reinforcements are needed as a priority.

But as soon as the Blues resolve the issue, they must focus on giving Mount a better deal. United might be lurking at the moment, but many elite teams can join them if they feel we have a weakness regarding Mount’s contract. Seeing him in any colour but Chelsea blue would be a very odd sight for our fans- especially if it is a direct PL rival.
