Chelsea engaged in a three-way battle for £50m Bundesliga prospect

Chelsea dealt blow as Manchester United join Josko Gvardiol transfer race

According to The Telegraph (Subscription Required), Chelsea have been dealt a blow in their pursuit of Josko Gvardiol as Manchester United have now joined the race to sign him. He has emerged to become one of the most sought after young defenders in world football ahead of the next season.

The Blues are searching the market for defensive additions in the centre-back role in the summer transfer window. They have identified Gvardiol as one of their targets to help with their case but will now have to deal with added competition for his services. Man United are in a similar boat and are now eyeing a move for the central defender.

Tottenham Hotspur have already expressed their interest in signing the Croatian international alongside Thomas Tuchel’s side. That could potentially pave the way for a bidding war to take place this summer if all the parties are actively vying for his signature.

Problems for Chelsea?

Following the confirmed departure of Antonio Rudiger to Real Madrid, it is imperative that we find a quality replacement for him at all costs. After all, he arguably was our best defender under Tuchel and losing him in and of itself is a damning blow indeed, looking at how he dominated the left-hand side of the defence.

Gvardiol, who has played for Leipzig in a similar position, would be a like for like replacement and the defender being left-footed makes him even more suitable for our three at the back system. In such a case, it would be best if the West London club would raise their efforts to sign him as he would instantly uplift our declined squad.

That being said, we now have more obstacles to deal with in our pathway, considering how the Red Devils have placed themselves into contention for the 20-year-old’s services. However, one could argue that we have the edge over them when comparing the success that we enjoyed with their trophy-stricken situation in recent terms.

Furthermore, Andreas Christensen’s exit, coupled with the potential departure of Cesar Azpilicueta, would provide Gvardiol with enough minutes to make a case for himself. Moreover, Thiago Silva would not be at Stamford Bridge for longer, giving him more leeway to become a regular starter moving forward.

That being said, signing a highly-rated talent like Gvardiol would probably be expensive, which seems to be the case this time around as well. It is stated that he would cost between £40million and £50million, which is quite high for a rising young defender. Nevertheless, he has proven his worth for club and country, so he would probably return this investment with his displays in the future.
