Transfer News: Chelsea offered the chance to sign Cristiano Ronaldo

As crazy and ridiculous as it sounds, it’s true. Chelsea have been offered the chance to sign Manchester United superstar and legend Cristiano Ronaldo.

It’s been quite a week at Stamford Bridge. Long-time Chairman, Bruce Buck and Director, Marina Granovskaia stepped away from their roles, a new board of directors was named and co-owner Todd Boehly was announced as the new chair and interim Sporting Director.

Boehly isn’t wasting any time and he knows that the onus is now firmly on him to live up to his current triple job title at Chelsea.

According to the Athletic (subscription required), the American held a meeting last week in Portugal with ‘super agent’ Jorge Mendes, whose most famous client happens to be Ronaldo.

During those discussions, it is believed that the future of United’s No. 7 was one of the many things discussed. Ronaldo has one year left on his current deal at Old Trafford and despite a terribly disappointing season for the Red Devils, he finished the season as United’s top-scorer with 24 goals across all competitions.

German champions Bayern Munich are believed to have been presented with the same opportunity. At this point, it remains unclear if either Chelsea or the Bavarian side will embrace the opportunity.

Should Chelsea go for Ronaldo?

One thing is for sure. Irrespective of where Chelsea finish in the league next season, Ronaldo, should he join, will score – a lot. That’s kind of a given, but at what price?

At 37 years of age, can he adapt to Thomas Tuchel’s intense pressing methodology? Will he be okay with taking a seat when players who are more naturally suited to Tuchel’s style get the nod ahead of him?

It’s a tricky one to consider really. Even more so if you consider Chelsea’s other attacking targets. Manchester City’s Raheem Sterling is reportedly the Blues’ number one attacking target for the summer. If Sterling comes, where does Ronaldo play? Does he play centrally? What happens to Kai Havertz then?

There’s a lot to answer and at this stage, Chelsea don’t seem to be in any rush or desperation to make this deal happen.
