Chelsea transfer discussions with England superstar off to a good start

Chelsea are stepping up their transfer activity and seem to have taken a step in the right direction in their pursuit of Manchester City star Raheem Sterling

The winger has been linked with a move to Stamford Bridge for weeks now and the latest developments suggest that a resolution may be in sight. Sterling has one year remaining on his current deal at the Etihad and has visibly grown frustrated with his recently diminished role.

Despite that, there’s a lot of mutual respect between City and the England international. Sterling is taking all the time he needs to make a well-informed decision and for that, he needs to have assurances over his playing time and role at his next club.

According to Nathan Gissing, a journalist who works for transfer expert Gianluca Di Marzio (h/t football.london), Thomas Tuchel has opened dialogue with Sterling and the news seems to be all good. The conversation appears to have been positive, and that will be a huge sigh of relief for both Sterling and Chelsea.

A decision will now be easier to make for the 27-year-old since he will have more clarity on his role should he move to West London, while the Blues can feel more confident in closing the deal for their “number one target for attack”.

Sterling joined City in the summer of 2015 and has since contributed 131 goals and 95 assists in 339 appearances. Startling numbers indeed, and easy to figure out why he is viewed as the top attacking target out of all the available (and doable) options right now.

A win-win for both Sterling and Chelsea

Having spent seven of his formative years in the Queens Park Rangers academy, Sterling is no stranger to West London.  Given how highly regarded he is by the Blues hierarchy and Thomas Tuchel, it will be easy for Sterling to see that he will indeed have a starring role to play.

Chelsea’s ambitions of competing regularly every year for silverware means that Sterling will be moving from one trophy-winning juggernaut to another.

However, at Stamford Bridge, he will be front and centre and not a supporting cast. With the “ice-breaker” between him and Tuchel now out of the way, we can expect things to gather pace on this front real quick.
