Chelsea’s defensive target confirms intent to leave Serie A side before World Cup

Chelsea transfer target Gleison Bremer expresses desire to leave Torino

Torino defender and Chelsea target Gleison Bremer is looking at his options for next season as he has decided to look for a move away from the Italian side. The 25-year-old star feels his time at the club has come to an end and is looking for a fresh challenge.

Speaking about his future in an interview with ESPN via Italian outlet SempreInter (h/t Football.London), Bremer revealed that he wanted to leave Torino last summer, but the club wanted him to stay and promised they’d let him go in a year.

The Brazilian defender wants to play Champions League football next season as he aspires for a call-up from the national team as well. The FIFA World Cup takes place in Qatar next year, with Brazil one of the favourites to win it.

“I told the coach and the management [last summer]: ‘I want to change now’. So they told me: “Stay this year, help us. Next year, you can take the next step. The fans already know that I have this desire to play in the Champions League, to go there to earn a call-up to the Brazilian national team”

He then went on to express his desire to play at a ‘better level’, which is understandable given his age and talent.

“I need to play at a much better level, so I think it’s a matter of time. I’m analysing some proposals but I think that next season I will no longer play for Torino.”

Should Chelsea go for Bremer?

The end of the season has seen the departure of some important players in defence, such as Antonio Rudiger to Madrid and Andreas Christensen leaving the club. Our captain Cesar Azpilicueta is also looking for a move away to Barcelona.

Thiago Silva is the only first-choice defender that Tuchel might be left with by the end of the season and he’ll turn 38 in September. Malang Sarr and Trevoh Chalobah have been involved in the first-team dynamics, but they’re far from the finished articles we need to be solid in defence.

With this in mind, the signing of Bremer is one that Chelsea should look to go after. He was an ever-stay in Torino’s defence for the 2021/22 season, starting 33 games, as the Turin side finished 10th in Serie A.

Chelsea are shorthanded in the position and if the Blues want to have any hope of lifting any silverware this season, it is essential that a couple of quality defenders be signed.

Bremer has proved his mettle in Italy and was widely regarded as one of the best defenders over the course of last season. His club had the best defensive record in terms of goals conceded apart from the teams that finished top four in the Serie A.

More Chelsea News:

We can give the 25-year-old defender Champions League football and the challenge he desires to move forward in his career, but we’ll need to move fast with other top teams also interested in signing him. Only time will tell whether Bremer lives up to his expectations, but that’s a chance Chelsea should take to have options in defence for next season.
