Chelsea are interested in signing Italian defender Alessandro Bastoni
According to Absolute Chelsea (via Repubblica) (via GIFN) (H/t Football.London), Chelsea are among the clubs interested in signing Inter Milan defender Alessandro Bastoni with Antonio Conte and Tottenham Hotspur also in the fray.
The former Parma man joined Inter Milan in 2019 and has since then gone on to become one of the best central defenders in Serie A and arguably, one of the top young centre-backs in the world. He has gone on from strength to strength during his time with the Nerazzurri.
The 23-year-old has had yet another fabulous season with Simone Inzaghi’s team. Having played 44 times for the club this season, the talented Italian has scored one goal and made three assists across all competitions and has a contract at the Giuseppe Meazza until 2024.
Inter Milan could be forced to sell some of their players and Alessandro Bastoni could be one of the players heading out of the club this summer. Chelsea are said to be interested in bringing the talented 23-year-old to Stamford Bridge but they will face competition from Tottenham.
The perfect replacement?
It is no secret anymore that the Blues have a defensive dilemma to solve in the summer with Andreas Christensen and Antonio Rudiger set to leave the club on free transfers.
That leaves Cesar Azpilicueta, Trevoh Chalobah and Thiago Silva as the only centre-backs at the club with the former’s future also far from certain. Thomas Tuchel likes to play with three centre-backs in his team and Chelsea will find themselves extremely understaffed going into next season.
The Blues will have to secure replacements in the transfer market for the outgoing players and Bastoni will not be a bad start. The Italian defender is just 23-years-old and has a lot of time left in his career. If Chelsea land on him, they could be signing a player for years to come.
Chelsea fans will have to be patient with Bastoni though as the Italian could initially struggle with the rigours of English football but the Inter defender has the talent required to get over the phase and become a huge asset for Thomas Tuchel’s men.

Bastoni will not come cheap but he will definitely be worth it. It remains to be seen if Chelsea manages to pull off a deal for him though.
