Chelsea open to a double transfer swap deal with Barcelona

Chelsea is considering a double transfer with Barcelona this summer involving Cesar Azpilicueta and Marcos Alonso

According to Sport.es (h/t Daily Mail), Chelsea are apparently open to a transfer involving Cesar Azpilicueta and Marcos Alonso, who are both keen to join Barcelona this summer. Barca keeper Neto and the winger Sergino Dest are expected to arrive at Stamford Bridge in return.

Chelsea recently named Todd Boehly as a potential owner after a lengthy spell of uncertainty over the club’s ownership. Now they would be looking to make a significant statement in the forthcoming summer transfer window and this swap would be a welcome move.

As Xavi attempts to rebuild his squad, the Catalan giants have been waiting for Chelsea to complete their sale before starting talks on the defensive duo.

Alonso joined the club in 2016, while Azpilicueta has been with them since the 2012/13 season. Both are now keen to follow in the footsteps of Blues defender Andreas Christensen, who has apparently already secured a deal with Barcelona.

Is Chelsea getting a fair deal here?

Both Alonso and Azpilicueta are rumoured to be interested in moving to the Nou Camp. It’s in the best interest of the club to sign Dest and Neto in exchange for the defensive duo.

Dest would be a decent deal for a defender who has made 31 appearances for Barcelona in all competitions this season but is currently out of favour. Shot-stopper Neto has only made four appearances all season.

However, we should consider the prospect of receiving some compensation given both of the Blues player’s contracts will expire in 2023. This money can be used to strengthen the defence by bringing in some experienced defenders during the summer transfer window.

With Antonio Rudiger and Christensen’s set to move on, Thomas Tuchel has enough concerns regarding his backline for next season. With the loss of these two players, the backline will be severely weakened. Planning a double exchange and acquiring both Dust and Nato from Barcelona would mitigate it to an extent.

It’ll be a win-win situation for both clubs, who are aiming to rebuild their squads for the coming season. The Blues’ could do better but it remains to be seen if they will take what they get.
