Chelsea eyeing out-of-contract Italian centre-back to address defensive exodus

Transfer News: Chelsea are interested in signing Alessio Romagnoli on a free

According to Daily Mail, Chelsea are interested in signing AC Milan captain and centre-back Alessio Romagnoli on a free transfer in the upcoming summer transfer window.

The left-footed centre-back has been at the Rossoneri since 2015 and has gone on to establish himself as one of the best defenders in Serie A over the past few years. Although injury-riddled this campaign, the AC Milan captain has proven pedigree and remains a player proven at the top level.

The 27-year-old has played 25 games for Stefano Paoli’s side this season and has scored one goal and one assist during this time. A largely reliable player, he still has much football left in him.

Chelsea are keen on adding the talented defender to their ranks but they will not have it easy with Barcelona and Bayern Munich also said to be keen on the former AS Roma man.

Solving the defensive crisis?

A huge summer awaits the Blues. Antonio Rudiger and Andreas Christensen are pretty much confirmed exits from Stamford Bridge whilst Marcos Alonso and Cesar Azpilicueta are also said to be contemplating exits of their own. There is every reason to believe that the Blues will be left massively short-handed at centre-back come summer.

There is absolutely no doubt that the Blues need to reinforce their backline in the summer transfer window and Romagnoli seems to be a great start. He costs nothing when it comes to a transfer fee and he could turn out to be a very shrewd signing.

At 27, it seems to be a perfect signing for Thomas Tuchel. The German manager is set to lose out two of his top defenders and replacing them with another player equally good and on a free transfer just seems like the perfect solution.

However, the Blues will not have it easy with giants like Barcelona and Bayern also circling on the player. If the Italian becomes available, there is no doubt that more clubs will join the race for the 27-year-old.

It remains to be seen how the Blues handle the situation they find themselves in. Signing Romagnoli seems to be a good start but we have a long way to go.

Pierre Kalulu and Fikayo Tomori have both formed a formidable centre-back painting in Romagnoli’s absence and appear to be the future of the AC Milan defence. All said and done, Romahgnolid could also do with a fresh start elsewhere.
