“Never secure” – Thomas Tuchel opens up on Chelsea’s hopes of securing a key season objective

Thomas Tuchel has his say on Chelsea making the top four

Speaking ahead of the game against West Ham as quoted by Football London, Thomas Tuchel has said that his team’s position in the top four is not secure and that there is still plenty to be played for.

Chelsea lost 2-4 to London rivals Arsenal in the Premier League midweek with goals from Timo Werner and Cesar Azpilicueta not enough to see the Blues overcome the Gunners. With Arsenal also beating Manchester United earlier today, they are just two points behind us in the fourth spot.

Thankfully we do have games in hand and can pull away should we secure maximum points. But then there are no easy games in the Premier League and we have discovered that on more than one occasion.

The Blues sit third in the table with 62 points against their name, two more than the next placed team – Arsenal. Having played fewer games than both Spurs and Arsenal, Chelsea still finds themselves in a fairly comfortable position but there is no doubt that a few more losses will set the cat among the pigeons in the Blues camp.

Speaking about his side’s top four chances, Thomas Tuchel has revealed that his side will have to continue to work hard and are never secure of a place in the Champions League spot until they are sure of it.

“We never feel secure. I never feel secure in the Premier League. It’s good. I think nobody should, never, because feeling secure does not keep you on the edge. Feeling secure is very close, a thin line to not being fully alert. I never feel safe in no part of the season, and nobody should be in Premier League.”

Keep fighting?

Although fairly comfortable for a top-4 spot at this moment, anything could happen between now and the end of the season and it comes as no surprise that Tuchel is not secure about it.

Chelsea’s inconsistency since the International break could come back to haunt the Blues if they do not arrest the slide between now and the end of the season. Scintillating victories have been by humiliating defeats and if this trend continues, a top-4 spot might be in danger.

LONDON, ENGLAND – APRIL 17: Chelsea will have to get back to their consistent winning ways (Photo by Mike Hewitt/Getty Images)

Tuchel will know that he has a job in hand to get his side as motivated as they were before and get back to winning ways on a consistent basis.

Faltering at the wrong time, the Blues have already failed in their Champions League title defence. They have also lost the finals of the Carabao Cup to Liverpool and face a rematch against the same opponents in the FA Cup final.

Winning the FA Cup and securing a third-place finish in the Premier League could manage to salvage the Blues’ season somewhat but they are surely way off from the lofty expectations set for them last season.

It remains to be seen how Tuchel handles this particular situation. His mettle as a manager will be tested but as we have seen in the past, expect the German to come out in flying colours.
