Romano: Chelsea sent scouts to assess 25-year-old Spanish star

Fabrizio Romano: Chelsea sent scouts to watch Villarreal centre-back Pau Torres

According to transfer specialist Fabrizio Romano on Twitter, Chelsea sent their scouts to watch Villarreal centre-back Pau Torres ahead of the summer transfer window. He has truly taken his game to another level over the past year or so, having contributed to his club’s and country’s success recently.

That has seen Torres become one of the most sought-after defenders in Spain once again this summer. What adds to the reason is his supposed release clause that will become active at the end of this season. That means interested parties would be able to trigger that €55million-€60million option and not have to deal with the Yellow Submarines when it comes to agreeing on a fee.

The Blues have been alert to this opportunity, and they have scouted the Spaniard as a result. However, they will face competition from two of the major Premier League clubs ahead of the next term. Manchester City and Manchester United would add to the obstacles that Thomas Tuchel’s side needs to overcome to complete a transfer.

Torres a necessary signing for Chelsea?

The 25-year-old is widely regarded as one of the more talented central defenders in La Liga right now. After all, he played a crucial part in helping Unai Emery’s side win the Europa League last campaign, beating Manchester United in the final.

What’s more, the La Liga ace’s performances have been impressive this term as well, having helped the Spanish club get to the semi-finals of the Champions League so far. Moreover, he is one of the cornerstones for Luis Enrique when it comes to rebuilding the Spanish national team with a young squad.

Torres has represented his side 40 times this season across all competitions while scoring five goals in the process. Signing a player like him could be considered a necessity, with Antonio Rudiger being set to leave Stamford Bridge for free in the summer transfer window.

As a left-sided centre-back, Torres would instantly slot in place for Rudiger, which makes the former one of the suitable targets for us this summer. However, we would need to part ways with a large sum for a man of his talents which is certainly understandable.

One could even say that the presence of the release clause would make Torres more feasible as the demand could have driven his price even further. It is no wonder why the two Manchester clubs are currently vying to sign him alongside us right now.
