“Gave it away”- Chelsea boss rues dropped points vs Man United as poor Old Trafford record continues

Chelsea boss Thomas Tuchel disappointed with failure to win despite “huge” display vs Manchester United

Chelsea boss Thomas Tuchel was left disappointed, having failed to win despite dropping a “huge” display against Manchester United yesterday. The visitors saw their winless run at Old Trafford continue, having last won a match at the Theatre of Dreams way back in May 2013.

Tuchel’s sentiment is certainly shared among the fanbase as well as the Blues had dominated the Premier League fixture. They were constantly cutting through Man United but failed to make the right pass or the accurate shot in the final third. That saw them drop two points on the night to a struggling home side.

Speaking in the post-match presser (h/t Football.London), the 48-year-old manager has admitted that he is frustrated with the result considering their level of performance. He also mentioned that his side was good overall apart from the final third due to a lack of precision in their attacking plays.

“Yeah, a little bit. A little bit. I thought we were very strong on and off the ball, very dominant on the ball, very aggressive off the ball, a lot of ball wins, a lot of deliveries, lot of spaces we found around the box. Unfortunately, we lacked precision around the box and a bit of determination to finish it off early in the match, but also throughout the whole match.”

Missed opportunity?

The German boss has conveyed that he is happy with the team’s display as all of them contributed to a “huge” effort yesterday. He added that they deserved to be the victors as a result but would now have to deal with two dropped points because of their mistakes in the final third.

“Unfortunately, when we had it, we gave it away in one minute. The reaction was good again so I am very happy with the performance because it was a huge team effort and I think we showed what we need to win on a big stage, a big stadium. Unfortunately, we don’t have what we deserve so we have to live with a point.”

The Red Devils had been in poor form coming into this match which makes this result even more difficult to swallow. After all, it was an opportunity for us to further get into the groove, but it failed to happen because of our attacking problems.

There were times when we failed to make use of the opportunities that were generated to our advantage. In other cases, the final pass lacked the preciseness or the right weight to generate a chance. That being said, our overall display was still entertaining and dominant, which does give us a sigh of relief.

Despite the two dropped points, we have a comfortable six-point advantage over Arsenal, who are in the fourth place in the league table. That does provide us with some leeway to deal with such unfortunate situations, although we hope not to see such results moving forward.
