“Conceded seven goals”- Chelsea star tells teammates to fix up defensively after Madrid loss

Andreas Christensen demands Chelsea to fix their defensive issues fast after Real Madrid loss

Andreas Christensen has demanded Chelsea fix their defensive issues as fast as possible following the loss to Real Madrid. His side were beaten by a 3-1 scoreline on the night as they failed to turn things around at Stamford Bridge after their defeat to Brentford in the previous game.

The Blues had an off day in the first leg of the Champions League quarter-finals as their first-half display was arguably one of the worst of this season. Christensen had a rough day as Real utilised Vinicius Junior to pour trouble onto the defender in the first 45 minutes. Thomas Tuchel eventually had to sub the centre-back during the half-time break.

Speaking in the post-match interview (h/t Chelsea official website), the Danish central defender has warned his team to solve their problems at the back at the earliest. He added that this issue is not a one-off case by pointing to the 4-1 loss they suffered to the Bees in the Premier League recently.

“We started good for 10 or 15 minutes, good energy with the crowd behind us – and they stayed behind us the whole game – but they successfully took the tempo out of the game. We have conceded seven goals now in two games which is not normal for us. It’s not just about this game, we did it as well at the weekend. We have to fix it, and we have to do it quick.”

Disappointment

The result is a frustrating one for sure, considering how the players performed on the night. We did not look like our usual selves in the first half, and the display seemed like an exact repeat of the loss to Thomas Frank’s side recently. The defensive setbacks are concerning since our backline has always been our best asset so far.

Just like the 25-year-old mentioned, the West London side needs to showcase a quick turnaround or else they could see their season getting derailed at such a crucial stage. With competition in the PL heating up and our CL prospects hanging in the balance, we must find a solution soon.

Christensen also needs to take a look at himself as he could have done better to shut down Vinicius Jr on our right flank. Perhaps the Blues ace could have used some support as Los Blancos often enjoyed acres of space to run into, which did play a part in the centre-back struggles.

Despite all these issues, we are still confident about turning this tie around if Tuchel’s side can get back to their best selves. After all, if not for Edouard Mendy’s mistake and Romelu Lukaku’s miss, we could still have been in close quarters despite the poor display.

We must use the league fixture against Southampton to bounce back and uplift ourselves ahead of the second leg. It is up to the players now to show a reaction to claw out of the two-match losing streak we are in right now. Whether that will happen, though, remains to be seen.

For now, the challenge for Tuchel remains to balance three competitions this month. While it is always unwise to take your foot off the pedal in the PL, top four isn’t looking all that hard. With a five-point lead over Spurs and a game in hand, perhaps saving our best players for the two cup competitions could be the smart choice this month.
