Tuchel gives honest opinion on Chelsea star squandering golden chances vs Liverpool

Thomas Tuchel addresses Mason Mount criticisms for horrible double miss in Carabao Cup final vs Liverpool

Thomas Tuchel has given his thoughts on the criticisms Mason Mount endured for wasting two golden opportunities in the Carabao Cup final. Chelsea lost the chance to win another trophy as Liverpool beat them in the penalty shoot-out following a 0-0 draw after extra time.

The 23-year-old midfielder saw two great chances come his way inside normal time, which he failed to convert. He was set up by Christian Pulisic in the first half, but he could only divert the shot into the side netting. The one after half-time was agonisingly close as it grazed off the inside of the post.

Speaking in the pre-match presser (h/t Football.London), Tuchel has defended Mount by conveying that no one deserves to be blamed alone for missing a chance. The manager added that such instances are a part of football, and he was happy about not running into these criticisms.

“Nobody deserves blame for missing a chance and I’m happy I’ve not read about it. The one person who didn’t want to miss the chance was Mason, you can be sure about that. It can happen and not every chance is a goal. Mason had a huge chance to decide the match, but he is fine. He arrived in good positions which is want you want.”

Mount must bounce back!

The Blues coach is right about the fact that we cannot expect every single chance to be converted. That being said, one would expect a player like Mount- a full England international- to step up at a crucial point for his team.

The fans certainly have the right to criticise the Premier League ace, but that should not turn into mindless hate. Setbacks are a part of football, so the central midfielder must use this defeat to push himself to get better in the future. That seems to be the case, looking at the message he posted on his Instagram story.

The Chelsea star wrote on his social media handle, “The season’s far from over, and there’s a lot more to come”, alongside two pictures featuring him in the League Cup final. There are other competitions that we can win this season, and maybe we could even get the chance to get one over the Reds in the near future.

We have faced them thrice this season, and all of those games have ended in a stalemate during regulation time. The first league game saw us hold out for a 1-1 draw despite being down to 10 men for more than 45 minutes, while the return fixture saw our team bravely fight back to rescue a draw after being 2-0 down.

Mount has been subjected to similar setbacks in the past, with his dry spell in front of the goal at the start of this season being one of them. Let’s hope that he overcomes the current blow just as he did before, as it would help us compete on the other fronts.

The midfielder has a chance to do just that when the London based side takes on Luton Town in the FA Cup tomorrow. Let’s wait and see in the coming months if he can achieve another trophy and put behind the ghosts of the EFL final.
