Speaking to AS as quoted by Football London, Chelsea left-back Marcos Alonso has outlined the improvements in the Blues since Thomas Tuchel took over from Frank Lampard midway through last season

Blues legend Frank Lampard was sacked midway through last season after a string of poor results and was replaced by former PSG and Borussia Dortmund manager Thomas Tuchel at the helm.

The German manager has since gone on to completely transform the team and lead them to a Champions League and a Club World Cup in the space of 12 months. The team is competing for the Champions League and the FA Cup yet again this season, although the Premier League might be out of reach.

One of the biggest beneficiaries due to the manager change at Stamford Bridge was Marcos Alonso. The Spaniard found himself cast aside during Lampard’s reign at Chelsea but has established himself as a key player in Tuchel’s system.

Speaking of what changed after the German manager was appointed, the Spanish left-back revealed that the team had taken a leap both tactically and defensively.

“Since he [Tuchel] arrived, the team took a leap tactically and when it came to defending. We are very happy with it”

A timely managerial appointment

Even the wildest of Chelsea fans would not have dreamed of the impact Tuchel’s management would have at Stamford Bridge. The German manager has been a revelation, completely transforming a struggling team and making them world-beaters within months of his arrival.

It is very evident that the players buy into his ideas like Alonso alluded to and the team only keeps going from strength to strength.
