25-year-old Chelsea star closes in on a verbal agreement with European giants

Fabrizio Romano: Barcelona close to reaching verbal agreement with Chelsea star Andreas Christensen

According to the transfer specialist Fabrizio Romano on Twitter, Barcelona are close to reaching a verbal agreement with Chelsea centre-back Andreas Christensen ahead of the summer transfer window. This update has put the English club in a precarious situation, considering how they could be in line to lose one of their assets next summer for free.

Christensen has less than six months left in his current deal with the Blues, which is the reason why Barca are in contact with him. After all, the Spanish club can legally engage in pre-contract agreement talks with the defender as they look to facilitate a move at the end of this term.

The Catalans are looking to finalise a move with a five-year contract in the offing and are set to make new contacts this week. No deal has been agreed to yet and the Catalans are choosing to play it safe. One cannot blame them given how the Giorginio Wijnaldum saga turned out last summer.

Christensen exit looms close

It is concerning that we could lose the 25-year-old for free in the summer transfer window. After all, we need to be managing our expenses when uncertainty has surrounded the future of the club. Roman Abramovich has decided to sell the West London side, which has put us in a bit of a tight spot.

We cannot let this slide and must retaliate and put forward an offer from our side at the end of this campaign. That should especially be the case, considering how Antonio Rudiger and Cesar Azilicueta are also in line to become free agents in a matter of a few months.

It remains to be seen how the club would react to this piece of news amidst all the unstable circumstances unravelling behind the scenes. If they cannot propose a contract offer at this moment, they should at least ask the Dane not to sign a pre-contract agreement until the uncertainty is solved.

With time running out for the season to end, we are hopeful that a solution can be found at the earliest and prevent a departure. After all, we do not want Thomas Tuchel to rebuild his defence once again when it is one of the most stable areas we have in the team.

Moreover, with Thiago Silva nearing the end of his playing career and Malang Sarr still needing time to gain more prominence, we cannot afford to lose Christensen after this term. Only time will give us an answer on the subject as we near the end of this campaign.
