French superstar with £66m release clause hoping for Stamford Bridge transfer next summer

Transfer News: Sevilla defender Jules Kounde wants to join Chelsea next summer

According to the Spanish publication Diario de Sevilla (h/t Football.London), Sevilla centre-back Jules Kounde wants to join Chelsea in the summer transfer window following his failed move ahead of this season. He continued to be sensational this season as well, even if there have been times when he lost his composure by getting sent off.

Kounde was so sure about moving to Stamford Bridge that he supposedly gave up his shirt number to Rafa Mir last summer. Mir had just joined Julen Lopetegui’s side at that point, and the Blues were in discussions with them to finalise a deal for the central defender.

Unfortunately, both clubs failed to reach an agreement, as Thomas Tuchel’s team were not ready to meet Kounde’s price tag after bringing in Romelu Lukaku. They are likely to try for the Sevilla ace once again, and the 23-year-old is eager to finally join them after this term.

Can Kounde join Chelsea finally?

With a release clause of £66million in his contract, the La Liga side had demanded a large asking price which eventually resulted in the failed transfer move. With his current deal winding down, it would not be too much of a reach to say Sevilla could consider selling him. Or else they could lose him on a cut-price in the future.

Moreover, with a potential crisis to unravel in the backline in the summer transfer window, Kounde could help us negate any setbacks that we will be dealt with after this season. Andreas Christensen, Antonio Rudiger and Cesar Azpilicueta are all in line to become free agents at the end of the current campaign.

With Thiago Silva being 37-years-old, we definitely need additions at the back to maintain our defence’s quality. Our defensive set-up has been the strongest point under Tuchel, so we cannot afford to decline in that area. Since Kounde has a desire to join us, we must use this advantage to facilitate a transfer.

However, the Spanish side could still be an obstacle in our path with their stern stance. It remains to be seen whether Sevillistas would finally budge in their decision or accept their terms if negotiations take place in the summer. Let’s hope that an agreement can be reached to put an end to this long-lasting saga.
