Fabrizio Romano confirms that Chelsea could discuss a new contract with star midfielder Mason Mount in the coming months
According to Fabrizio Romano on Twitter, Chelsea could be interested in entering the discussion with their rising star Mason Mount over a new contract. The club would be looking to start talks as early as possible so as to avoid any further complications later down the line.
The 23-year-old has been a sensational presence for the Blues in the middle of the park ever since joining the first-team setup. The English midfielder was first integrated into the senior squad under the tutelage of club legend Frank Lampard and has managed to grow in stature since then.
Mount’s current deal with the West Londoners expires in 2024. That being said the club would vary of the fact that his impressive performances would have attracted a lot of interest from potential suitors who could be lining up to make a move should the opportunity arise.
This step could be taken as a necessary precaution to ward off any kind of interest from other clubs. At 23, the midfielder still has some of his best footballing years ahead of him. The English midfielder came through the ranks at Cobham and has developed into a fan favourite in his relatively short time with the club’s senior squad.
Mason and the mounting contract issues at Chelsea
The Stamford Bridge outfit are currently in a precarious situation with several key players such as Antonio Rudiger, Andreas Christensen, and Cesar Azpilicueta out of contract at the end of the season. None of them have penned an extension with the club and a defensive exodus seems even more likely with each passing day.
This has left Chelsea in a fragile situation of sorts and the club would be looking to avoid such a nervy moment in the future by negotiating a new contract with Mount who has proven himself on the big stage time and time again. The attacking midfielder has gone on to win several trophies with the club at such a young age and could potentially pave the way for the future at Stamford Bridge.
The 23-year-old has already scored seven goals and provided eight assists in 34 matches across all competitions for the Blues this season. The prolific midfielder has been instrumental in the middle of the park for Thomas Tuchel’s side and is currently nursing an injury that he picked up in the final of the FIFA Club World Cup.
