“Make a big impact”- Tottenham icon urges club to sign 28-year-old ace playing for arch-rivals

Van der Vaart urges Tottenham Hotspur to sign Chelsea forward Hakim Ziyech

As per the Times (Subscription Required), former Tottenham Hotspur playmaker Rafael van der Vaart has urged his old club to go out and get Chelsea star Hakim Ziyech, in a bid to strengthen the team and push higher up the Premier League table.

Ziyech was last seen turning out for the Blues last weekend, as Chelsea beat Spurs 2-0 at home in the league. The game saw the Moroccan winger curl in a sumptuous effort into the Tottenham goal as he opened the scoring in the second half of the game.

Tottenham were sorely missing a creative spark and energy in midfield during the game, as they were put to the sword by a Chelsea team that has now gotten the better of them thrice in the space of two weeks. This relentless showing by the Blues also saw them dump Spurs out of the Carabao Cup, as they progressed to the final and now have a chance of winning a trophy early in the season.

Van der Vaart rued how his former side have been performing of late, despite the arrival of Antonio Conte mid-season sparking a revival of sorts. The last match particularly frustrated the Dutchman, as recalled a time when he was a player when the London rivals were more evenly matched.

Ziyech’s recent revival

Ziyech has not been without his own troubles of late, having to work hard to establish himself in the starting lineup for Chelsea. Injury troubles and inconsistent performances have defined his Blues career so far, but it now seems like the player has hit a purple patch, scoring twice in as many games.

His recent form has seen Ziyech identified as a creator that Spurs require to restore their DNA by Tottenham cult hero van der Vaart, who believes the player can make a huge impact in north London.

“I’ve been saying that for some time now, but I believe Ziyech is the type of player who could make a big impact in the current Spurs team.”

Ziyech’s recent performances seem to have shut critics up about his form and attitude on the pitch. His creativity has certainly come to the fore in recent games. It is fair to say that the 28-year-old is now playing like the player we thought we had signed from Ajax Amsterdam.

His creative skills and range of passing are what made Chelsea splash the cash on him, hoping that he can recreate the same form he displayed while in the Eredivisie. Although it has taken some time for us to see the best side of Ziyech, it has certainly come at a time when we need him most, as we look to enter February with our eyes on the Carabao Cup and FIFA Club World Cup trophies.

Van der Vaart’s message to his old club to bring Ziyech to N17 is sure to go in vain, as it is highly unlikely that Chelsea will sell a player to their London rivals. Given the fact that Tottenham are in the race for a top-four spot alongside the Blues, the possibility of sending any player let alone Ziyech to Spurs is almost minimal.

As for us, we can hope that Ziyech rediscovers his best form when club football resumes once again. The second half of the season brings the promise of silverware, and we may require the Moroccan to come up with the spectacular if needed.
