“It paid off”- Chelsea youngster gives verdict on his superb showing vs Chesterfield

Chelsea winger Callum Hudson-Odoi rates his performance against Chesterfield in the FA cup third round

Chelsea winger Callum Hudson-Odoi gave his thoughts on his performance during the 5-1 win against Chesterfield in the FA Cup third round. He had an excellent display and was also on the scoresheet as he doubled the lead through a long-distance stunner.

With that goal, the 21-year-old has now become the player with the highest goal contributions in the FA Cup for Chelsea since he had made his debut in 2018. He leads the charts with four goals and four assists and would be looking to continue that streak in the next rounds.

Speaking in the post-match interview (h/t Chelsea website), Hudson-Odoi explained his objectives for the match given by Thomas Tuchel while explaining how he used those tasks to create his own aims. The youngster then gave us an insight into how his stunning goal came into being.

Hudson-Odoi has not featured consistently for Chelsea.
Hudson-Odoi became the Chelsea player with the most FA Cup goal contributions since his debut.

“I was told to be wide and be direct and create as many chances as possible. I said to myself I have to try and create, be aggressive on one v ones and win your battle every time. As I ran inside I was looking for an option to pass, but I said to myself let’s just go for goal. I could see the keeper was a bit more to one side, so I whipped it as much as possible. I was delighted it paid off.”

Build on that display!

With some tough matches set to follow later this month, it is good to see how the Englishman had a great showing despite being played as a wing-back. He would probably want to play in his natural position further up the pitch but rising up to the challenge and helping the team in any way possible would be appreciated by any manager.

The Blues forward has three goals and four assists across all competitions this season, having made 21 appearances. We could see him used as a left wing-back this season after Ben Chilwell’s injury, while Reece James’ absence can also mean Hudson-Odoi plays down the right flank at times too.

Thomas Tuchel wants Chelsea players to be more clinical in front of goal.
Chelsea settled the game early in the first half thanks to a four-goal lead at halftime.

The English attacker was left on the bench multiple times early in the season, but he has fought his way back into the lineup since then. That indicates how the Cobham graduate is eager to succeed at Stamford Bridge so let us hope that Chilwell and James’ loss turns out to be Hudson-Odoi’s gain this season.

We will face Tottenham Hotspur in the second leg of the Carabao Cup semi-finals on Wednesday, followed by the Premier League clash against Manchester City on Saturday. The squad would need to be utilised to its fullest to raise our intensity for these high-profile matches.

The Chelsea youngster is bound to earn more minutes for that reason, and he must be ready to take that opportunity in the best way possible. Tuchel is certainly not an unfair manager and if the Englishman impresses the German during this phase of the season, he could see his minutes increase in the near future.
