Transfer News: Jorginho’s agent confirms interest from Juventus amid sanctions on Chelsea

Speaking to Italian outlet Calciomercato as quoted by Metro, Joao Santos, agent of Chelsea midfielder Jorginho, has confirmed that there is interest from Juventus and the Italian could be on his way out considering the uncertainty at Stamford Bridge.

Ever since Roman Abramovich had his assets frozen by the UK Government, Chelsea are operating on a special license according to which renewal of player contracts is banned. The Italian’s contract at Stamford Bridge comes to an end in 2023 and with all the chaos surrounding the club, Jorginho’s agent has hinted that an exit could on the cards.

The ownership change process is ongoing at Chelsea, and if the new owners assume office soon, they may be able to convince the Italian to stay in England. However, with arguably the biggest club of Italy in Juventus wanting the midfielder, it remains to be seen if Jorginho would want to make the switch to Turin.

The Italian defensive midfielder has had a spectacular last two years capping it off with a third-place finish in the Ballon d’Or rankings this year. Time and again he has proven his worth for both Thomas Tuchel’s side and the national team and there is no surprise in Juventus wanting him.

Speaking on the Old Lady’s interest and the Chelsea situation, Santos said,

“I know of their Juve’s interest in Jorginho. We have a contract with Chelsea until 2023 and it is a particular moment for the club, where there are no negotiation”

The Italian’s agent, however, confirmed that if the situation at Stamford Bridge is resolved, the priority is to negotiate with the Blues.

Not the only exit on the cards?

This Jorginho issue is something for the Blues to worry about but not in the immediate future. The 30-year-old still has 18 months remaining on his deal and Chelsea have the time to renegotiate.

The Blues have a bigger problem to solve with the contracts of three of their centre backs expiring this summer. Andreas Christensen, Cesar Azpilicueta and Antonio Rudiger could be on their way out if they fail to renew contracts with the Blues. Considering the predicament the Blues find themselves in, Chelsea are restricted from renewing contracts of these players.

Losing Jorginho is a loss of quality for the Blues midfield but he is not irreplicable. Chelsea may hope to keep the Italian in London but if he does end up leaving, quality alternatives could be available on the market- or who knows, even at Cobham.

Chelsea will hope the ownership takeover happens as soon as possible so that the noise around the club dies down and players could stop worrying about their future and start focusing on football. Until then, the Jorginho saga may well continue.
