“Second chance”- Chelsea star reveals thought process before scoring vital winner vs Leeds

Chelsea star Jorginho reveals he did what he always does after scoring added-time penalty winner against Leeds United

Speaking to Sky Sports after the game, as quoted by football.london, Chelsea ace Jorginho revealed that he does what he always does after scoring a penalty in added time to secure a win against Leeds United.

The Blues had yet another nervy game on the weekend. After suffering a defeat to West Ham last weekend and losing out on the top spot in the UCL group following a 3-3 draw to Zenit in midweek, a victory on Saturday was crucial.

Leeds had a couple of players unavailable, but that did not stop them from taking the game to us. Marcos Alonso conceded a penalty after just half an hour and Raphinha put the visitors in the lead. Mason Mount soon equalized before Jorginho scored a penalty 15 minutes into the second half after Raphinha brought down Antonio Rudiger inside the box.

Joe Gelhardt equalized in the dying embers of the game before Mateusz Klich fouled Rudiger inside the six-yard box. Jorginho stepped up again and sealed a victory in added time. The Italian revealed his thought process behind scoring the second penalty.

“For the keeper, he has the second chance, you know. You take the first one, and then you have to take the second one. But you try to do what you always do.

“You win a game like this, last minute at home in front of your fans supporting you, so it’s amazing. This is football, and this is why we love this sport.”

Jorginho to the rescue

The Italian has come under scrutiny in the past couple of weeks. He was arguably at fault for the goals conceded against Man United and West Ham, which eventually cost us crucial points. However, he made no mistake on Saturday night.

Leeds might have penetrated our backline twice on the night, but there was very little the 29-year-old could have done about either goal. He did bring some control to the game, not to mention the calmly slotted penalties.

His start-and-stop spot-kick is often confusing and can turn out either way. The former Napoli ace has missed from the spot previously, most famously in the European Championship final against England. Thus, the midfielder deserves the credit for holding his own in such a crucial game for us.

Man City and Liverpool needed penalties to secure victories on the day, and the Blues did the same to keep pace with the Top 2. We are still only 2 points off the top, but we need to improve our defensive performances rather than relying on penalties to bail us out.

But it’s good to have the Italian midfielder back amongst the goals from the penalty spot and this would certainly assuage the fears some fans would have had after Jorginho’s shaky penalties in the past few months.
